At Least There’s Wine

DSCN1932I’m not going to lie. Transitioning into my new position has been more of an adjustment than I thought it would be.

The first week, I was so uncomfortable sitting for an extended period of time, I fidgeted in my retro white computer chair all day. Despite every effort, I just couldn’t get the templates right. When I remembered to link out to previously published articles, I forgot to update the shopping elements.

The most exciting (and frustrating) part has been learning my voice for the six different verticals. Naturally, I feel most comfortable writing for the verticals that cater to women. We have two: fashion and health. We also have business, technology and science fiction verticals that I always struggle through. I never know if it makes sense.

DSCN1936 DSCN1926 DSCN1931To say I’ve been concerned about my progress would be an understatement. My mom knows that all too well. I talk to her almost every day while I’m walking home from work.

“You’re excitement grows each week and while you’re stressed, it’s a good stress,” she said giving me an example by repeating something I said earlier in the conversation. “You’re stressed because you want to do a good job, which is normal. Before, you were stressed because the job was…” her voice trailed off searching for the word. “Emotionally draining” I offered knowing exactly what she meant.

She was right.

Either way, I couldn’t wait to go to Cava Winery and Vineyard. We were invited for a surprise birthday party. It was an hour away from our apartment and I knew it would be just what I needed to clear my head.

The winery felt like a small farm to me. There was a tractor sitting on the land. Cherry, apple and pear trees were planted all over making me excited for the fruit infused wine I’d already eyed in the tasting room. Two women were splitting a case calling off the names of the ones they wanted like Blueberry Pinot Noir and Apple Pie.

My group sat outside listening to a band who crooned eighties hits like Luther Vandross’ “Never too Much.” Two bachelorette parties were taking place right behind us. The brides stood out with sashes or veiled hair clips that blew in the wind. It made me smile thinking about my upcoming bridal events.

DSCN1902 DSCN1891We scoffed down all the cheese and bread entrees that covered our table. The menu included pizza, bruschetta, nachos that had a smoky taste and a cheese platter accompanied by homemade orange marmalade.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Sauvignon Blanc. I’ve never tasted one that suited my palate. It’s usually too dry for me, but this one had a subtle sweetness that was light and crisp with hints of apple and peach. The Watermelon Blush was my kind of wine. It was as refreshing as the melon itself. The light carbonation tickled my tongue making me think of a spritzer. I usually prefer white whine, but the Red Sangria and Acai Raspberry Cabernet were by far my favorites. I marked them off on the order form with three check marks so I’d know how much I enjoyed them.

I walked away completely rejuvenated resolving to try harder the following week. But not before picking a couple apples and pears that I used to make homemade apple butter. And while I can’t buy happiness, it’s comforting to know that when I do feel stressed, there’s a flavorful bottle of Cava Wine waiting at home for me. Four bottles to be exact.

What’s your favorite way to de-stress after a long week?
