I know my hair looks weird in your tiny hands.
To be honest, my hair also looks weird in bigger hands and blowing all over my head, too. Or at least, that is what some people think.
And as hard as it is to write this to you, that’s what they’ll think about your hair too.
No matter what mommy, daddy or even you do to your tight coils, it will never be enough. It will never look how others think it should look and for that, I am sorry.
Know that it has nothing to do with you because you, my love, are beautiful. From the ends of your curls to your tippy toes.
There will come a day, hopefully no time soon, when you will have to decide what to do with your curls.
You will want to wear it straightened like your classmates. You’ll want to see how long it is. Is it at your shoulders or touching your back? You will wonder how it looks and whether or not the hairstyle is you. If you decide that it is you, that is perfectly okay.
But if you decide to keep it in it’s natural form, know that is just as okay.
It is my hope that whatever you do with your hair, you do it because that is what you want. I hope you wear it that way because it’s reflective of some statement you are trying to make at that stage in your life.
I hope that you won’t change it or chemically alter it out of other’s lack of understanding of your hair and what it means to you. Your hair and the hairstyles you choose don’t have to make sense to other people. The only thing that matters is that it makes sense to you. That it makes you feel beautiful and confident and gives you the courage to face the world the best way you know how.
Your hair is an extension of who you are. It can express things about you that words just can’t do, but it does not make up the whole package.
Please don’t allow others to make you think that it does. Don’t allow others to reduce you to just your hair and it how it looks.
Because if you are anything like mommy and daddy, you are going to be smart, ambitious, strong and brutally honest. So I know you won’t need anybody to tell you who you should be and how you should look.
I can’t wait to see the person you grow into, hopefully, with a head full of hair that matches your personality.
Love Always, Aunt
