Dear New Yorkers

I am soooo sorry.

I am sorry for believing the lies about your city, your neighborhoods, but most of all “those New Yorker attitudes”.

As a fellow city girl, I should have known better.

I shouldn’t have judged you based on what others said, wrote or what I have seen on shows or in movies.

I really should have come earlier to make my own opinions about you and your city instead of letting others’ biases hold me back from the wonders that is New York City.

To be honest, they’ve made similar comments about my beloved City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. People also think that we are rude, angry, and all go, go, go.

I know that your city was recently ranked the unhappiest place to live and I don’t know about that.

But what I do know is that every time (and I mean every time) that I have come to hang out in your city, you’ve proved them wrong.

Many of you gladly stopped what you were doing, sometimes missing a train or bus in the process, just to direct me. Even when you weren’t 100 percent positive, you went out of you way to ask others for directions on my behalf. And you did it with smiles on your faces, might I add.

More recently, a woman pulled me aside to show me not only where I was going on a map at the station as well as on her Iphone. She informed me what app she was using and told me the benefits of it. And just to make sure she was giving me the correct information, she kept reiterating our conversation.

Others have outlined what landmarks I should look for when I get to my location and that has been extremely helpful.

So from this Philadelphian hoping to make your city mine, thank you.

Thank you for showing me my way.

Thank you for being better than people give you credit for and proving them wrong.

But most importantly, thank you for showing me a different side of New York and it’s residents.

From here on out, I will do my best to let my own experiences determine what I think about people, places and things.

Sincerely,

Yaszy
