High School Daze

Remember when you were in high school and you thought you were the ish? You had your group of friends and thought you knew yourself pretty well, right? Yeah, me too.

Yesterday, I was able to reflect on my younger self during a visit to my high school for a scholarship dinner. It was…interesting. Though I was there to acknowledge the new recipients accomplishments, I couldn’t help but think about the person I was when I attended that school. I will admit, it wasn’t all good, but it was an important part of my journey and I am grateful for it.

I remember being one of five students in our school receiving that same scholarship. I remember crying during my thank you speech to the donor and informing him how much the scholarship meant to me and my family because I would have otherwise had difficulty paying for my college education. I also remember stuttering and probably shaking through it too because I hate speaking in front of people.

I remembered running down the stairs to Humanities class with my friends while cracking jokes on each other. I remembered the dances we had at the school and getting all dolled up for them. I remembered making ice cream in our chemistry class with Ms. Rogers. I remembered the difficulty I had with the females in my classes. And I remember sitting around graduation day before we headed over to the dusty church for the ceremony.

I remembered it all and you know what, I am not mad at it one bit. If yesterday taught me anything is that I have come a long way.

Like many of the scholarship recipients last night, I made a choice to do well on my assignments, in my classes, and to better myself by furthering my education. I DID.

And just like I did so many years ago, I am making a choice to change my future. And you can too!

What will you do today for a brighter future?

Oh, and in case you are wondering about the Blog Everyday in May Challenge, I didn’t forget about it.

Yesterday’s prompt was: A list of links to your favorite posts in your archives

Because this blog is so new, I don’t really have any favorites right now. I am still figuring out this whole thing, but if I had to choose, it would be this one.
