Looking Out for Blessings

It's nothing fancy. Just a container and strips of recycled printing paper and wrapping paper, but it works.

It’s nothing fancy. Just a container and strips of recycled printing paper and wrapping paper, but it works.

When I received a text from my friend asking if I was busy Tuesday, I was all too ready to get out the house for some fresh air. She had taken off because she would be working all weekend and needed to run some errands.

It wasn’t a problem until I misplaced my keys after my walk and made us miss our bus. We waited for the second one and unbeknownst to us, it was not going the direction we needed to go. We end up and walking across the bridge to our destination. Then my friend noticed she lost her keys sometime along our journey. I would have been freaking out, but she was as cool as a cucumber.

Even though she couldn’t get into her apartment, she was still able to look at the bright side– she was finally able to shop at a major budget supermarket. I admire that about her. She was in tune with everything around her and the endless possibilities. What a beautiful trait to have?!

I am not like that. I would have surely dwelled on my missing keys, which would have ruined my day. I wouldn’t have looked at the brighter side and I wouldn’t have seen the blessing in the day. I did that often. I realized it was a problem when I almost missed my blessing that day.

My friend offered to pay my bus fare as a thank you for my willingness to come with her, but I told her that I got it. “Maybe I just want to treat you. Why do you want to turn down your blessing?” she said. I decided not to argue.

When I got back to my apartment, I made sure I filled out a small piece of paper for my gratitude jar that I had long forgotten about. On it I wrote, “For my friend who constantly teaches me to find the blessing in every situation.”

Are you looking out for your blessings?
