Last night as I caught up on BET’s hit series “Being Mary Jane,” I couldn’t help but notice the commercial with women stating “I am Mary Jane because…” I thought long and hard about that statement and while nobody wants to be compared to a sperm-stealing woman, the character is relatable.
Mary Jane is an ambitious, successful and beautiful woman who is unsure of what the future holds and is trying to navigate life the best way she knows how. Some could argue that she is crazy for the lengths she is willing to take in order to become a mom, but we all are a little crazy.
While I was completely enthralled with the story line, my attention kept diverting to those little Post-It notes plastered on her headboard, mirror, and at her job. I loved how she would grab one each time she was going through something and needed some inspiration.
It reminded me of the screen shots of quotes and messages that I keep saved on my phone. And the ones I keep in my wallet just in case the screen shots don’t do it for me.
If all else fails, I recite the Serenity Prayer over and over until I feel better. If you are not familiar, the Serenity Prayer is “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
These past couple of years have taught me the importance and power of positive affirmations. It seems so simple, but it works wonders.
Here are some of my favorite screen shots:
