Prompt: Five songs or pieces of music that speak to you or bring back memories.
If there is one thing that you should know about me, it’s that I LOVE to sing. I have never seen myself as a singer because I am too shy, but I do it all the time. And mostly without even noticing that I am doing it.
Every time I sing, it transports me to the time that the song came out. I can vividly remember what I liked about that song and what boy I was talking to at the time. Ain’t that a shame that I associate songs with boys? I guess that is how it is though.
The bad part about remembering all that is, it comes through when I am singing. I didn’t realize that until one day I was with a date headed downtown to get something to eat. I began singing my little heart out and when the song was over, he asked me what and who I was thinking about. Yikes!
I don’t remember what I told him, but I definitely made a mental note to not sing around him again. Talk about awkward.
Anyway, let’s get down to the five songs that speak to me starting with I Believe in You and Me by Whitney Houston.
Beautiful by Christina Aguilera – This takes me back to my high school days when I used to hang with the girl next door and blast this album loud when her parents weren’t home. Those were the days.
If Only You Knew the rendition by KeKe Wyatt – This song takes me back to my freshman year dorm room in Pennypacker Hall my freshman year. I had this song on repeat on Napster. Remember that? It was during the time that me and my significant other began talking. I tried to find an actual video or live performance of this and couldn’t find any that included the entire song.

Uprgrade You by Beyoncé – So, I love all things Beyoncé so if I could pick more songs, I would have selected all of her songs. Yes, it’s that serious. Anyway, when I was in college I was in a mentoring group for freshman and transfer students. For orientation, we had to spend a weekend in a cabin to learn about the program and bond. The only CD we had one year was Beyoncé’s and I was in pure heaven. I knew that album front to back in a matter of hours.
Turning Around For Me by VaShawn Mitchell – I just love love love this song right now “because I still believe, it’s turning around for me.” It’s just a reminder that regardless of what is going on in your life, things will get better. I believe it and I hope you do it.
