Five Things I’ve Learned Since Starting My Job

Two months ago today, I received the call from my current boss offering me the job position.

I knew it would be a challenging position because I had never worked in the field and had no knowledge of what it would entail. Shoot, I never even been to a similar location before. But I didn’t realize how many interesting and sometimes funny things I would notice by working in the position.

I have compiled a short list of some of the things that I have realized. Enjoy!

1. The penny and the dollar is no longer valued: I don’t know about you, but this is a shocker for me. Everyday, my cash register has more and more pennies surrounding it because people prefer to leave it rather than save it. Its interesting how people will go out their way to ensure they get back a nickel or a five dollar bill. Money is money to me.

2. Personal space is no longer appreciated: This doesn’t apply to everyone, but some people just do not realize how important personal space is. There are a couple of people who are always on the backs of the people in front of them. One time, a guy turned around and stared the person down as if to say “back up”. You would think that person would get the message. Nope.

3. Electronics have made us lazy Before I took this job, I thought that computers and electronics helped us. Now, I am not so sure. I am completely convinced that it’s because of electronics and the immediacy of everything that we no longer take the time to read things. I say this because every day, I have to talk almost every customer through the prompts on the screen to complete their transaction. Mind you, most of the time, I see the same people at least two times a week.

4. It is perfectly okay to take out your dentures mid-conversation: I wish I could tell you this didn’t happen, but it did and I couldn’t believe my eyes. The guy just took it out and held it. I remember thinking that can not be hygienic.

5. You can’t have a great day if you are married: This is not my opinion. Every time this one customer comes, out of habit, I say “Have a great day!” Instead of saying “thanks, you too” like most people, he says “I can’t, I am married.” The first time he said it, I thought he was joking. I expected him to tell me so, but he didn’t. He just kept on walking like it was nothing. I couldn’t believe my ears and apparently neither could the other customers who overheard him because they were just as shocked as I was.

Happy Monday! Have a great week!
