GOing APE in Maryland

We were all smiles until we realized the task at hand.

If you knew me in real life, you would know that I am a big punk.

I am not adventurous or an outdoorsy type of girl.

So when one of my college friends said she wanted to do a bunch of physical activities for her birthday, I looked at her like ‘who is really going to do all of that?’

It turns out 10 of her friends, including me, end up doing it. And you know what, I LOVED IT! I can not tell you how rewarding it feels to do something that you thought you couldn’t or wouldn’t do because of fear, but I will get into that later.

Fitted for my harness and ready to go...sort of.

Saturday morning, I traveled to the Go Ape Zip Line and Treetop Adventure in Maryland and I had a ball.

Can I tell you something? So we get to the first obstacle course and we have to climb up this rickety ladder attached to a tree. Then you had to walk across this super spaced out bridge to the next tree and I literally had to count my steps just to keep doing it. In case you are wondering, there were 18 planks of wood on that particular bridge. The next part is to Tarzan swing to a net to the next obstacle. I froze. I could not let go and I seriously wanted to quit. Luckily I had people to coax me on so I just took a deep breath, sat down in the harness and let go. I hit the net so hard and had the hardest time getting to the next obstacle.

I also froze at the second obstacle, but I just needed a miniature pep talk that time around. After that, It was a piece of cake even on the fourth obstacle that was considered “extreme.” It was the highest course on the park meaning we literally had to climb trees for what seemed like days. Talk about a work out, but it made the reward, which was a 500+ feet zip line, worth it. Woot Woot! It was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!!!!

On the fifth obstacle course. How many people can say they skateboarded in the air?

This pic is a bit deceptive. I am pretty high in the air.

Woooooo!

Woooooo!

Again, I can not tell you how rewarding it feels to do something so out of the ordinary. I never would have said yes to this last year. But this year, I am determined to step out of my comfort zone and experience more. I almost feel like I need to if that makes sense. For too long, I had one reason or another why I couldn’t or wouldn’t do something – I don’t have the money, a ride, or that is simply just not me. If I learned anything yesterday, it’s that sometimes you just have to get out of your head, don’t think about it and do the thing that scares you the most.

I did it! They gave us certificates.

Most of the group posing with their certificates. The others hurried to their cars. We were starving!

I recently read a quote that said “It’s not who you are that holds you back, it’s who you think you’re not.” I agree.

I am ready for my next adventure. Are you?
