I am really trying my best to live a healthier lifestyle. I stopped eating meat. I drink vegetable and fruit smoothies almost everyday. I seriously cannot drink enough water. I try to eat foods that positively fuel my body. I have even tried to decrease how much I snack.
But sometimes, I just can’t fight the urges. I give in to the powdered donuts, whole bags of chips, and all the other snacks in my cabinet that I am clearly not avoiding well enough.
I am not proud of this. I know that’s not a good look for my lifestyle goals, but sometimes I just want something…anything…different.
Is it too much to ask for something that helps subside my salty or sweet cravings, but also healthy? I present to you homemade apple chips. They look a little on the dark side, but I promise they are not burned.
What you will need:
– 4-8 apples
– cinnamon
– sugar (optional)
Set your oven to 250 degrees. The low heat will dry out the apples, which is what you are trying to accomplish to make the apple chips. Once you set the oven, do not increase the heat. I did that and it did something to the apples. When I say did something, I mean burned, but I promise it wasn’t these. I am being serious.
While the oven is warming, rinse, pat dry, then slice the apples as thin as you can. I didn’t bother decoring them because I kind of liked the star-shaped design that the core and seeds made. The seeds will fall out as you cut, but there might be some still hanging around so take those out.
Line an oven-safe dish with parchment paper. Stagger the slices and sprinkle with your desired amount of cinnamon. If you are using sugar, repeat the same step and flip so that both sides get some love.
Unfortunately, this recipe will take approximately three hours so please make sure you have plenty of time on your hands. When I made mine, I washed my hair, cleaned my apartment and wrote a blog post. Talk about productive.
I only used two apples and then regretted it sorely for the amount of time that it takes. Trust me, you want to use as many apples as your oven will hold. Enjoy!
