I Thought I Would Know (The Proposal Story)

I have heard so many stories from women saying they knew the moment their boyfriend was going to propose. So, I always thought I would know. I thought I would see a change in his behavior. A flinch or smile whenever the topic was brought up. Just something.

That was not the case.

Friday, we went to Philly for what I thought was just date night. He told me his mom’s church was having a prayer breakfast the following morning and thought it would be something different for us to do. That was true and I was all for it.

I got off of work and it was coming down outside. Normally, he is able to pick me up on Fridays, but because he had a mock audit, he was running late. When I realized what time it was, I called him saying that we could reschedule for another weekend. He informed me that wouldn’t be necessary because he would be home in 45 minutes and he was.

For once, I was already dressed and ready to go. We were going to be late, but it was nasty outside so I figured the restaurant wouldn’t be that hard up on us about the time. As we looked for parking, I noticed the cute little park near the restaurant all lit up and I wanted to make sure we stopped there before heading home so I could take pictures for this blog.

We ate at Devon’s Seafood Grill and I was blown away. My Seafood Grill was absolutely delicious. His New York Strip looked good even though I don’t eat meat anymore and the apple croustade was absolutely divine. To the point that we must have looked like kids trying to eat fast to ensure we got more of it than the other.

Upon leaving the restaurant, I was no longer interested in that park. It was still raining. My hair was getting wet and as a natural girl, that is a big no-no. My hair can go from big and cute to just big real fast and I didn’t want that, but I was persuaded. And as we walked through the park, I was captivated by the beauty of it and all the Christmas lights that adorned the trees.

We talked about the similarities of walking through that park and what it must be like to walk through Central Park , where I hope to be able to walk through on a more consistent basis some day soon, during this time of year. I told him that I truly appreciate the way he supports me and my dreams. He made it seem like it was nothing. That’s what he does.

Then he asked if I remember when I asked him whether he believes in love at first sight. Apparently, he didn’t answer me at that time, but was ready to tell me what he thought. He informed me that he was talking to my brothers about it and realized the first he saw me, he knew he wanted to marry me.

“Why are you just telling me this now,” I asked as I was busy taking photos of the park. Half listening, I heard him say there is an important question I want to ask you.

I must have temporarily gone deaf because I didn’t hear a word he said after that. All I remember is him pulling out a box from his pocket, opening it, trying to get on one knee before I stopped him and asking me to marry him. And this is a guy that doesn’t like to get his hair wet and he was ready to not only get his new pants dirty, but wet, for me. In disbelief, I kept asking if he was serious because I did not see that one coming. It took about a minute and half to finally answer him and it’s been surreal ever since.

I don’t know how he managed to get the ring without me knowing. I don’t know how he was actually able to pull it off and surprise me before somebody spilled the beans. And I don’t know he knew what size ring I could fit because I have never tried on a ring at a store with him before, but I am sure happy that he did. I just I thought I would know when it was about to happen.
