Lunch at Max Brenner’s

Do you want to know something?

Of all the years and all the dates that the fiancé and I have been on, I have only planned maybe 10 percent of them. And that might be pushing it.

So this year when I sat down to write my goals, I intentionally wrote “Plan more dates. Don’t let him do all the work.” The Eagles game was my first attempt of the year and I think I scored. Pun intended.

This Sunday, was my second attempt. I saw a post on Instagram that Philly Restaurant Week was coming up and saved the dates in my phone. My plan was to just surprise him and tell him we are going out, but he got the update because he is on their mailing list.

I looked through the long list of participating restaurants and was stuck. They either had a menu that only I would eat or only he could eat. I really started to select a French restaurant, but questioned it because, well, let’s say I am more experimental with food than he is. I end up choosing something fun because we were doing lunch. I clicked on the restaurant mainly because of the weird name, Max Brenner’s Chocolate by the Bald Man, but then I liked what I saw. The menu suited both of us and if all else fails, I hoped I could get some great pictures to show you guys. That didn’t quite work out the way I would have hoped because it was packed, but it was still a cool experience.

As soon as I turned the corner to get to the restaurant, I could smell the chocolate in the air. Inside, it was packed, but that didn’t take away from the character of the restaurant. The chocolate shop was so cute and I really wish I could take more pictures there. Booths were sitting below jars of candy and I thought it was such an added detail. There were chocolate pipes running throughout the restaurant that read “100 percent chocolate” and it reminded me of one of my favorite movies when I was a child, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” I could just see the oompah loompahs on the bank divided by the river of chocolate.

The food came, and I was extremely impressed. I had the spinach and artichoke dip and he had wings as an appetizer. My main meal was the quinoa and chick pea waffle salad was AMAZING!!!! I did not think that I was going to like it as much as I did. He had the Brenner Burger, which he said was really good. And the dessert! We shared his Banana Chocolate Hazelnut Crepe and it was so yummmmy!
