Night At The Met

IMG_4751I’ve been thinking.

About what draws people to each other. After a conversation at work, I decided that women are attracted to passionate men.

But.

I think the same can be said about friends.

I realized that after attending the fifth-highest attended exhibit at The Met, China: Through the Looking Glass, with Channing.

Personally, I’ve never been interested in fashion. If I’m being completely honest, I’ve never even understood why people call it art.

Channing, on the other hand, lives and breathes it. I find her passion for it absolutely refreshing. That’s why I didn’t hesitate when she invited me to a late night showing.

“When will you ever get a chance to say you were in a museum at midnight sipping champagne?” she asked.

Aside from it being well-curated, I was in absolute awe by the beauty and the attention to detail that was apparent in each piece. Some items I could easily see being worn here in the states. This one oversized shawl-looking dress reminded me of something the local singer for the town’s speakeasy would wear. I imagined Shug Avery from one of my favorite movies, The Color Purple, shimmying in it during that scene when she sang to Celie.

I also imagined the events the women would wear these outfits. Not before stopping to dab some Yves Saint Laurent Opium on their wrists pulling out the pretty celebratory bottles that were sitting on display.

With lavish house robes, outerwear, menswear-inspired pieces and that gorgeous gold dress on display, it was hard not to view it as art.

And while I just started appreciating fashion, it’s inspiring to see how far someone else’s passion took them. I just know Channing’s passion is going to take her just as far.
