If I asked you, what does it mean to care for someone else this Valentine’s Day, what would you say?
I will never forget the moment I learned my answer. The year was 2019. My love and I were among about 40 people on a secluded beach in Key West. We were all there for a wedding that we had traveled to by a cruise ship. It was a glorious day so when we exited the ship, we walked through a town square passing vendors along the way. We walked until we reached The Conch Tour Train that transported us to the beach. During the train ride, the engineer shared facts about the Floridian island. He was sure to note the grand weeping trees that were reminiscent of those in New Orleans.
Imagine this:
Sand in your toes. The soothing sound of crashing waves filling the air. Birds cawing in the distance. The sun beaming above and patiently waiting for the bride to sashay arm and arm with her father down the aisle.
During the service, I sat behind a couple about the age of me and my love. The husband wore a linen outfit. The wife, whose fro hawk I was obsessed with, wore a maxi dress. The straps made a big X on her back where sweat beads gathered. And throughout the entire service, her husband fanned her back with a calming rhythm.
I thought I was the only one who noticed this sweet gesture. I wasn’t. Following the service, one of the man’s friends made a joke about how he fanned his wife and not himself. And it’s what he said that I will always remember.
He said something to the effect that he wants to be of service to his wife. He then followed it up by saying “even Jesus served others.”
I tell you this story because I want to take a page out of that man’s book whose name escapes me. His words, however, will always live in my heart about what it means to care for someone else: service.
Though it’s not quite the same, this Valentine’s Day, I want to be of service to my love. After a long day, I’m serving him his favorite craft cocktail, an Old-Fashioned. But I’m extra so I’m adding a twist with the help of Ogden’s Own Porter’s Peach Whiskey, a Canadian Whiskey. It’s a smooth whiskey with enough sweetness to share it with your Valentine’s. That’s true even if they don’t usually drink whiskey, like me.
