What I Learned From “The Odd Life of Timothy Green”

Hi there, I hope you had a nice Labor Day!

This weekend was fun. I hung out until the wee hours of the morning Friday and Saturday with a fashion show, dinner, and a drunken game of taboo with friends from college, but it put a toll on my body.

So Monday, while everyone was probably at someone’s barbeque pigging out, I was home wrapped in my blanket watching “Life of Pi” and “The Odd Life of Timothy Green. And I enjoyed every bit of it.

I know what you are thinking, those are movies for kids. That they are and it’s for those reasons that I wanted to see them.

There is something so special about a kids movie that makes you believe in the impossible again. As adults, we tend to get bogged down with the reality of life and we stop escaping to different worlds. We stop imagining. But more importantly, we stop dreaming and it limits our abilities to see a different life for ourselves.

I know I once dreamed of being an entertainer until I realized that I didn’t like being in the spotlight, so I moved on to another dream. I am sure you guys had similar dreams too.

I loved both movies, but The Odd life of Timothy Green really struck me. In case you are not familiar, the movie is about a couple who just learned that they cannot have children. Instead of focusing on the sad endeavor, they focus on what their child would have been like creating a string of strange events including the appearance of a mud-covered boy named Timothy. I have provided a link to the trailer below.

What I learned from the movie:

Don’t be afraid to envision the thing you want the most even if the exercise seems silly
As shown in the trailer, the couple envisions the thing they want the most, which is a child. They think of what qualities they would like the child to possess, what it would be like to have a child and the joy it would bring to others.

You already know that I have done a vision board and am working on a vision book so I am all for focusing on your vision in order to see it manifest. Granted, it might not happen as quickly as it happened in the movie, but it is still important to focus on what you really want.

Too often, we allow other people’s expectations of what our life should be like influence us instead of doing what makes sense to us. You will see this is also true in the movie. We have to do what makes us happy.

A little belief goes a long way

The couple is a lot like other couples. They are working to survive, but they don’t really like their jobs. Cindy, who is played by Jennifer Garner works at a local museum and her boss is difficult. Jim, the father, works at a pencil factory and there are looming budget cuts taking place, which really puts a strain on him and his family.

It is through Timothy’s faith in his parents that pushes them to think outside the box and combine their talents, which not only helped them but the entire town.

You might not know if or how something is going to work out. That doesn’t matter. The most important part is to take action to at least see if your dream or idea is possible.

Share pieces of yourself

Timothy was considered strange for more reasons than one. But perhaps the most unique part of him was that he had leaves growing out of his legs. And as special as they were to who he was, he shared them with others to show people that he cared.

It’s important to share ourselves with the people we care about because we all have something unique about us that others can benefit from.

What did you dream about becoming when you were younger?
